I love hot dogs. I'm glad my parents loved me and never sent me to camp. It's Jason on the Titanic essential way. I expected this to be a lot worse than it was. The grass hash, the weed, dig it, the weed.
Welcome to Does It Hold Up, the podcast dedicated to potentially ruining your childhood and all of your fond memories that occurred before mom and dad went camping and never came back. I'm Brock, I'm Amanda, and I'm Brad. And today we are discussing classic, I don't know, yeah, it's a classic, yeah, it's it's sprung. I mean, it's sprung a whole huge series.
It's probably the second most popular horror film genre, I mean, series, yeah, I mean, you know, Friday the 13th. The original Friday the 13th is what we're doing. So the very first one came out in 1980. And I mean, you can't really say it started the slasher movement because technically Halloween came out before that. And then I was reading about, there's a movie called Black Christmas that is considered like the first one. And I think it came out in 1974. But it definitely launched the 80s slasher pick explosion, I guess you could call it where
it was all about, you know, teenager sex and getting killed. Woohoo! A good time, the 80s were awesome. So I was going to say, so yeah, this was definitely just a money grab. They saw the success of Halloween and yeah, of Halloween, and they clearly, the producers just didn't even have a plot, didn't even have a script or anything. They just made the opening title sequence where the title card comes through and breaks
the glass. They had that. And then they took a full page ad out and like vanity, whatever the publication. And then nothing else and sold it strictly on the name. Yeah. Yeah, that was it. They had no script. They just said, hey, it's Friday the 13th. Yep. Let's do it. Yeah. They just said that they were purposely writing the success of John Carpenter's Halloween. They had no, like you said, it was just a pure money grab. Well, you know, so apparently when they're filming it, they realized almost all the way
through it that they never mentioned that it was Friday the 13th in the movie. No character, it's actually, it's just a throwaway line when the main camp counselor guy is in the cop car where he's getting the ride home from the diner. Yeah. And the cop says that he's like Friday the 13th and a full moon. You know, we've got statistics that show that all the crazies come out. That's it. That's all they ever out. And then the title card says, actually, I don't know if the title card, but it comes to present day.
I don't even know. It says it's June 13th, but I don't know if it says Friday the 13th. It says Friday. Yeah. Does it say Friday, June 13th? I don't think so. Yeah. I just think it says June 13th, our present day. Yeah. Yeah. Crazy. Cause so I watched it last night. So this took place in 2021. I was thinking the same thing. Yeah. Which makes, which makes all the rest of them after this, the 12 sequels or whatever. They're all prequels now. All right. I'm just, I'm just, it was funny.
I actually saw a video about the Simpsons the other day and apparently recently there was an episode where Homer talks about how he was, when he was young, he wanted to be a DJ in the 90s. What? But when the show first came out, he was like in his 30s in the 19, like late 80s. It's like, it's all just the Simpsons has been out so long. It's collapsing. It's on its 31st season. So someone put out today, I saw our yesterday on Twitter. They said, if you, you can watch one tree house of horrors or special every day of this
month. For those of you at home, we're recording the beginning of October. So yeah. Yes. It is the second day of October, as a matter of fact. Spooky. Yeah. I have to admit, we actually watched Friday the 13th yesterday, Amanda and I, and Brad, I think you said you did the same. I did, yeah. It was, it was pretty fun cranking out, cranking out, you know, an old slasher movie on October 1st as we head into the spooky season. And I've never seen less like I've never seen it. You don't remember anything. I've never seen, I, I had no interest.
I was, I would be pretty cruder girl. I would be honest and say that I don't remember how often I saw this particular one, mainly because, you know, the odd thing about it is there's no Jason. There's no killer. Jason is not the killer. Yeah. Spoiler. Sorry. I expected this to be a lot worse than it was like, I mean, I'm not saying that this was a great movie or a cinematic masterpiece or a good movie or a, it didn't suck near as
hard as I thought it would. Like I really, I expected this to be an absolute travesty. So Amanda, you said you'd never seen it before. Brock, well, what was the last time you think you saw it? Not including when I watched it on the dead meat podcast or a dead meat YouTube channel. Well, did you watch the whole thing then or just the clips, right? That's not the whole thing. No, no, it's, it's just, it's clips, oh God, I don't know because I feel like I know I
watched this as a kid and I've probably watched it a few times, but I don't think this is one that we would go to if we wanted to watch a scary movie. We would, we would start maybe with the second one or do the ones after that because you know, you had like, you actually had Jason with the hockey mask and Tommy and it got gorier and you know, there wasn't. Why doesn't he have a hockey mask? He finds one, one of the, in part three, one of the characters has it as a goof and he steals it from it. Why is he an adult in the sequels and he drown as a kid? Well he didn't.
Don't ask questions. He like aged in the pond. Well, apparently he never died. I don't know. I don't know. Like he drowned as a kid, right, like, yeah, somehow obviously not that's the thing is like his mom's crazy, obviously, right. So did he really drown? Did she think he drowned? Was she take was he taken from her because she was crazy and she made up this thing in her head? I don't know. I don't know. Like it seems like the lake is a real thing for Jason.
I mean, I guess let's get into the first part because I do really have like a big trouble with what we're talking about right now about how this is even a franchise around this and how they just basically like, fuck it, don't think about it too hard because yeah, yeah. So, I mean, do we want to just start like, yeah, if you're looking. Yeah, I can jump. I can jump into the plot. Let's just talk about the first, the first part and then before the 1958 part, then I have questions. Okay. And I would. Yes.
We probably don't have answers and I would like to thank Brad for supplying me. With a slightly better plot summary than what we found on Wikipedia. So we're gonna, we're gonna kind of venture out in this one and we're gonna go to a horror wiki site. So woo. Yeah. They have wiki sites for everything. Yeah, they do. Yeah, pretty much. All right, brought. Take it away. All right. The film begins at Camp Crystal Lake, a summer camp for children on Friday, June 13, 1958. It is nighttime and through the eyes of an unknown person, we watch his two teenage, two teenage
counselors sneak away from a campfire sing along to have sex in a nearby barn. That is like a running theme through all of these, of course, you know, if you have sex in your teenager, you're gonna die. It didn't start the whole teenagers having sex getting killed by slash. Yeah. I saw some, I was gonna say, I saw some critics said that Jason and Mrs. Voorhees are the original cock blockers. It's, it's pointing out the dangers of premarital sex. Wow. It's a period movie. It's been over time.
That's right. The two counselors, Barry and Claudette are surprised by the unknown person and the person proceeds to murder Barry. Claudette tries to flee, but is eventually cornered and murdered in a cool freeze frame before the title card comes flying in. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, with the forgettable fan. All right. So I'm gonna have to pull from some of the, you find out later when you actually get introduced to Mrs. Voorhees, who's the killer at the end, she's the one who killed these two camp
counselors in 58. Her son drowned the year before, which she worked there as the cook. One, how is that camp still open? If they've got, presumably a dead kid that drowned, that they never got the body back from, because wouldn't, I mean, it's a lake. We can, clearly from all the shots, you can see the other side of the lake. They never found the body. They said that? And they never found the body. How else do you explain in part two, he's, well, that he's, well, one, yeah, the end
sequence, which doesn't make any sense, but that's a dream. But also, how do you explain, as Amanda said, that he's an adult killing them, killing people in the second one? I have lots of issues, if you think about that, if she worked there, if she worked there as the cook, his mom, right, and they're at this camp. And her son drowned at midnight, well, these two camp counselors are having sex. Why wasn't she watching her kid? She was cooking. At midnight? Well, but it doesn't, it doesn't say what to talk.
He said he drowned at midnight, like he went out swimming and drowned, and the counselors weren't watching him. So I guess the counselors were supposed to be watching him in the cabin, and they left, and so he snuck out. Okay. I never picked up on that. Yeah. Midnight. I never heard that either. So did she say midnight? I thought it was. It's just assumed in my head that, like you just drowned in the middle of the day, and they kind of, they're like, all the kids are out for swimming. He, they're supposed to be life guarding, and they, they snuck off. Maybe, all right. Maybe I got that wrong. And I guess, so way though, Amanda, you're right, like, uh, yeah, this, I mean, like,
well, I don't know, if it's, if it's my scenario where it's during the day, it is on the camp counselors. But if it's at night, and he sneaks out for midnight swim, that's not on them. Right? But I mean, and even like, I don't know, there, if you've got a bunch of kids in the, in the lake and both counselors, they got like, nobody's going to notice that work, they're more count. I don't know. I just, I never went to camp. So I guess I don't really understand how this works. I guess you just don't understand how horny it, you get when you watch kids swim.
Right. I mean, it's just, you can't control yourself. You just can't control it. And it's like in the middle of the day, you feel like you get busted. But my thing is, like I said, so There's just so many inconsistencies. Well, and then we're, we are, we're thinking, you know, but I have, this happens, why not kill the counselors that we're working then? Well, that's why she went back the next year. That's my next question. Is Barry and Claudette, were they the counselors that were having sex last year? And they just got rehired. The only thing I can think of, the only thing I can think of is that they mentioned this
when the, the townsfolk are talking to the girl in the beginning who we haven't actually gotten to yet. But they say like the camp closed and now they're reopening. So maybe it was like she expected them to close the camp because her son died. They didn't. She went kind of nutty, went and killed two counselors. Then they closed the camp. Oh, but now they're reopening. Well, time to go kill some more. She does say in her little monologue that it was the anniversary of her son's death. Yeah. So, I mean, I don't know, it's, it's Bizarro, like it is.
And then she also mentioned, or the, the town people mentioned something about like how they try to open in 70, whatever didn't work out. And then how there was the fires at one point, which I was like, whoa, let's hear about the fires. Like what was that? No. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It looks. And I mean, it's obvious that the police in this town are inept because it's a small town. There aren't that many people who could be doing this. Not tracking down the zodiac, let's, let's, let's get this woman and put her in a home
or something. Are you saying that Jason's it up? Yeah. So, I mean, yeah, it's, it's not the most sturdy of plots, but I mean, they probably wrote it in the afternoon. Maybe. Yeah. I mean, it's not, it's not a bad idea. The whole idea of like a mom going crazy because her kid dies and plotting vengeance. Even if in her head, it makes perfect sense. Right. And everybody else is, it's insane. Well, she's insane. That would follow. I did read that the writer Victor Miller said that Jason, it was just a plot device to give her. Yeah.
And, and then who's the actress who plays Mrs. Voorhees that's a, she's the famous one, right? The only sort of famous one. Yeah. Well, like the rest of the world, Broadway actors, Betsy Palmer, well, Kevin Bacon eventually became famous. Yeah, but most of them were Broadway actors, but like apparently she was a method actor and she had this whole backstory where she had her character had Jason.
She was out of wedlock by having premarital as a teenager. And that's why she had this, like, and share her family disowned her because of it. And that's why she had this aversion to teenagers. So then it's just like this extra layer, which I guess that they had actually somehow incorporated that into the, when she has her little talk, it would have made more sense, like she's just a loon and, yeah, and premarital sex, teenage sex, ruined her life. And then it did it again by killing the one thing that was the symbol of the ruin.
Yeah. I mean, there's layers there. She actually, but they didn't do that, but she essentially wrote a prequel on her own. Yes. To justify. Yeah. For her to actually, which was interesting. We actually talked about that because it was obvious that this, you know, they put this out. It had a small budget. It made a lot of money. So they quick, let's crank out another one. And they had to come up with some way to do it because, you know, the main bad guy's dead. Her head is nearly lobbed off. I think today they would make a prequel. Right. They would tell the story of that initial night or something.
But in this instance, they said, no, let's make the Jason guy somehow magically come back. And then it just, I was telling, I was explaining it to a couple of my kids last night and it just, it took on a life of its own at that point. Right. It is amazing to think that when you think of Friday the 13th, you think of Jason in a hockey mask. Right. And you never see that until the third move. Well, also, he's got a bag of, he's got a burlap sack. It's pretty, it's pretty scary. He looks like, uh, actually creepy, but it looks like, um, what's that one? Is it the, the hills have eyes or it looks like?
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Something like that. You're thinking of like the cover of the movie. The cover of the movie. Yeah. The guy has the overalls in the burlap sap. And I think they stole it from that. So, um, yeah. There's nothing official here. And they are not apologetic about all about stealing stuff. It's from the town that dreaded sundown. Yeah. That's it. It's about an actual murder spree that happened in Texas in the 60s and that guy is like hovering over the town in the background. Yeah. It's creepy. Yeah.
That's where they got. But he's, that's the second one. I mean, it's pretty creepy. But yeah. So I mean, apparently the original, I think, I just looked at the picture of Jason. Yeah. And when they rip it off, he's got like this crazy deformed face. And so they make that leap where it's like, it's from like somehow still alive. Yeah. And I don't know if they ever even try to explain how he's still alive. Yeah. They just wrap with it. This is the point of the movie. The point of the movie is just we're going to kill a bunch of teenagers after they have sex. I think, I think it's the original, the producer, one of the producers of this, the writer and
the director, the studio came in and said, make a sequel because it's made so much money. And they're like, and we want you to use Jason. And they were like, how the fuck can we use Jason? He's dead. He's dead. We don't care. And then they brought in other people who figured and basically just, well, it's weird. If you watch, start watching the second one. It's five years later, but that's what it says in the story, but it's made in 81. So it's really a future. It's a sci-fi movie. Do you think about it? Yeah. Well, one interesting thing about the second one is the girl that survives the first one,
they kill her off at the beginning of the second one, only because they wanted her to come back. And she said, no, because she had a stalker incident that happened after the first one. And she was like, I need to go into hiding, essentially. And so they're like, fine, come back, we'll film like five minutes, we'll kill you off. And then we'll go and just basically have a completely different movie about you. Yeah, Alice. So they had to tie up that loose end, but then, you know, but you could also make the argument that maybe they were piggybacking off of the Michael Myers thing, because at the end of
the first Halloween, he gets shot, falls off of a balcony and walks away. He's like this superhuman, whatever. So we need something like that. So let's make it change. Oh, they definitely make them superhuman. I mean, he comes back from the dead and he gets resurrected later on. Yeah. Yeah. It gets dumber and dumber, but I think I was watching something where they were talking about that there's an argument that I think it's like the fifth one is the best one. I don't know. No, the fifth. The fifth one's the fake Jason, Jason's not even in it.
It's the sixth one. The sixth one. The sixth one. How many are there? Uh, well, that's Jason X. Yeah, but they started. I think there's 13 all together because there's, I think they stopped at Freddy versus Jason maybe. And actually they released, they just had a renewal, a new one. It's just like a 13 part, you know, it's just Friday 13th again, which, I mean, I mean, Jason goes to space Amanda and that one's pretty good Jason takes NASA, but I mean,
the leprechaun went to space and I know, but this one, I mean, it's the Jason goes to space one. It's like the year 20, 2,700 or some shit like that is an earth is basically dead and there's a camp in space. No, they, there is, oh my God, there is a one point on the, they basically have like a hollow deck from Star Trek and they make it a campsite just to fuck with Jason. Oh my God. That's pretty funny.
And then he's also like part machine too. So he's kind of like a Terminator is, it is bonkers. It's a money grab. So yeah, there is a set number of people who will go see a Jason movie no matter what. Yeah. And that's what they were. It's like fast in the furious. It's the movie of those mail. Yeah. It's the same movie redone. I mean, but people like it. So, but yeah, I was thinking about, there's one Jason takes Manhattan, which I've never seen for real, but I was talking to my son about it and he was like, that is the stupidest one.
I was like, why? And he goes, it's not Jason takes Manhattan. It's Jason's on a boat and he shows up at Manhattan at the end. Yeah. It's like apparently he's just on a boat for two thirds in the movie. Yeah, they're on a, they're on like trying to get to Manhattan apparently. He must think of seeing Broadway music. Yeah. So it's, it's, it's, it's, you know, it's Jason on the Titanic essentially. And then he, yeah, then he shows up in Manhattan and he winds up killing a few people. It is a senior class trip that happens to be a cruise to Manhattan and he latches onto it and because it's a camp, well, it's essentially it's camp logic.
Yes. It would have been better if he'd walked along the bottom of Camp Crystal Lake to an outlet to the ocean in New York that would have just, yeah, I feel like he does something like that to get out there. I feel like that's where he gets to the boat. Something like that. But, um, he, uh, a minute, it's because there's teenagers that want to have sex on the boat. So he's there to stop him. Right. He's the original cock, he is the, he's the ultimate cockblocker. Yeah. So going back in our way back machine again, we're now back to 1980. So we've, we've gone from 1958 to 1980, 22 years later, the camp is being reopened after
being shut down for the murders of the two counselors by a man named Steve Christie. One of Christie's newly hired counselors, Annie, decides to hitchhike to Camp Crystal Lake because you could still hitchhike back then. No, you could. You managed to hitch a ride. What was that? You couldn't have barely spoiler. Right. Yeah. She manages to hitch a ride with a truck driver named Enos, but before leaving, she encounters the town crazy Ralph who warns her that Camp Crystal Lake has a deadly curse. Camp Ralph might be my favorite character. Yeah. And it sucks.
I'm just going to put that out there right now. I hate that. Which one's Ned? The real. The racist, Indian girl. He does the Indian dance and he's like a big head making pot jokes to the cops and he's just, he's a dipshit. He's the one kind of glad that they all died. Like I didn't like any of them. He was the one that a fake surrounding, right? So you can make out. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Great scene. Yeah. These movies are really sexist. Oh, it was the 80s. But at least it, I mean, the only survivor is the woman.
That's true. It's always the final girl. Yeah. I mean, it's never a final. Well, there's sometimes a guy, sometimes not, but it's always, yeah. If you kill all the women off them, there's no TNA scenes. Yeah, but there's no TNA in the final world. She's the classy one. Yeah. Yeah. The whore never survives. Yeah. Because I'm having sex. That's the whole point. Exactly. We've come full circle. Yeah. In this, he also warns her about the camp and tells her about a boy that drowned in Crystal Lake and the two counselors that were murdered.
Annie dismisses these warnings and continues to Crystal Lake, only to then hitch a ride from an unseen stranger who proceeds to chase her into the woods and murder her by slashing her throat. I thought that was really interesting where they're like, oh, Ralph's just the town crazy. Don't listen to him. Then they get in the truck and Ena says the exact same damn thing, that the camp is cursed. Camping should go up there. And I'm like, so he was creepy, the way he was like, you're pretty. I'm like, okay. He seemed like he was going to be down that creepy road and he like pushed her in the butt. Yeah.
He sent after that. I mean, I was expecting more creepy. Yeah. Yeah. In the later movies when they have that type character, they're really fucking creepy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The creepy characters get creepier. The girls get naked or the guys get doucheier. I mean, it just, it just, everything gets amped up. Everybody in this movie packed a robe to this camp. We're going to get into that. We, I have stuff to talk about when it comes to the clothing choices. Yeah. It's pretty fun. Amanda, since you said you've never saw before, no, let me ask you this. Last night as you're watching it, at any point, did you think crazy Ralph was the killer?
No. No. Okay. So they said that he was supposed to be like a diversion, like to put to that you were supposed to think he might be the actual killer. But I was like, you had seen podcasts about this. Do you think if you had seen it, because I mean, they do definitely, it's heavy handed. Like, oh, it's got to be crazy Ralph. He's crazy. No. No. Yeah. That's right. I mean, like the thing is like, I have never seen this, but I knew that Jason's mom was the killer, but even watch, like watching it. I don't think that I would have gone down.
I mean, did anybody really think that? I mean, the thing is, it is not one of those things that you can figure out. She's nobody, nobody. Yeah. You meet her. No. Yeah. You just know that there, you just know that there's a killer at the camp. Yeah. And when you meet her, you know, she's the killer. It's like, yeah, who was this random person showing up 52 minutes into the movie? And yeah, she's like, Oh, dear, don't worry. You're just hysterical. Sorry. We're skipping ahead. But yeah, I'd be like, Oh, fuck you lady.
You're the killer. Yeah. I mean, the only thing that you might have picked up on is that she's driving a Jeep when she pulls up. That's I don't know how you notice that unless you're like, you know, when I don't remember, like when we get, we finally get to the camp and everybody's talking about, like, you know, doing their chores. Does anybody like, Hey, where's Annie? They do talk. Yeah, they do mention the show of her and she must be running late. And I think, right, Alice asked the main guy, like, isn't there somebody else coming? Where's Annie? They mentioned her. And somebody bitches about, I guess we're going to make our own dinner.
Yeah, she's supposed to be here. She's supposed to be really good cook. So yeah, they are, yeah, so that she was supposed to be the cook ironic that she'd be the first I'll be big. Yeah. There you go. So she can, you don't know that the moms of the cook until the mom shows up. I know. But they keep. I know that that Annie was going to be a counselor, or does she just decide to kill her on a web? No, she tells her. She's like, when they, when they cut back to when she's in the Jeep, she's like, yeah, while she's going to Camp Blood or Camp Crystal Lake. Okay.
So here's a, that's an interesting one. Here's a question. Um, Jason's mom's driving down the road in the Jeep. She's a teenager walking. If Annie had gotten in and said, oh, I'm just passing through, would she have killed her? Would she have just let her go? Was it like as soon as they, she said I'm working at Camp Crystal Lake that it was like, well, better get my murder knife out because I got a murder this girl. I feel like just, I feel like she had to be, well, no, she couldn't have been in the diner when she comes in the diner because they would have realized, oh, that's the crazy cook lady
whose son, her son, they would have been like, yeah, I mean, that's just, that's just a convenience. Like I said, this, this is not a tight street. No, it's not. But do you remember they say it's like 20 miles from the town and they have to go, that's pretty good. They have to go to that crossroads. So maybe she's just waiting by that crossroads knowing that anyone walking up there is going to most likely be going to Crystal Lake. Yeah. I mean, maybe she picked up three other teenagers that day and they were all like, nope, just passing through and she's like, I'll let you live. Good day. That's a good point.
I mean, you know, maybe don't think place about it, but you have to have what she know. Well, she tells it when Annie gets in, she dumps, she's like, it's my lifelong dream to work with kids and I'm going to cook and I mean, she, but that's the only time that she wouldn't know before that. Yeah. Yeah. Interesting. All right. So three of Christie's newly hired counselors, Ned, the dipshit, Jack and Marcy, arrive at the camp and meet Mr. Christie, as well as a few other counselors, Bill, Brenda and Alice. They all begin refurbishing and setting up the camp without Annie. After a while, Mr. Christie heads into town, leaving the 16s to finish their tasks.
They eventually take a break and go swimming where an unseen prowler watches them from the other side of the lake. Ned, the jokester of the bunch, pretends the drown only to get mouth to mouth from Brenda. I'm so glad he's dead. I just wish. Yeah. He was just so glad. It was like from that point on, I'm like, he dies. Right? Yeah, I might think he is watching this last time, watch it with Kelly, right? And every time we're like, this is like a 56 year old woman that is attacking these teens.
Yeah. You're trying to and hiding in the woods, like at one point, Alice walks from like the camps down to the raft and essentially walks right by her because that's the vibe they're giving with the camera angle. But do you think that was really happening or was like, was she literally standing there? Why? What? I thought that's, yeah, why? Isn't that? Isn't that? I mean, yeah, I felt like how are you not going to notice a woman in June in a sweater in New Jersey? Yeah. That was one of the clothing issues with me.
I was like, what time of year is this? Yeah. Because like everybody's dressed in robes or in sweaters and yet they're swimming. Yeah. The hell is going on? I could tell you why she's dressed like that. Okay. Well, a little brad fact for you. Oh, yeah. Please. I'm in here. So Sean Cunningham, the director, wanted her to look more muscular or masculine. So they padded her up and then put that underneath her clothing that made her wear the sweater on top to cover it to make her look bigger so that it looked more feasible that she could
take down these teenagers, especially young teenage males. I guess. I mean, for me, it's like it's scarier to think that a little person, you know, a little woman who's just nuts could do something like this, but I guess, yeah, okay, but a little, a little a little a little believability in this movie that we're punching holes in left and right. So let's see. The counselors start making lunch for themselves when a police officer arrives at the camp to warn about route. Oh, I don't crazy. Yeah. What? Oh my God. That police officer is awesome. He has.
I think he has the best line in the whole day of movie. It was. I'm going to hold on. So he's our officer. Dorff is his name, but I'm like, it's a pretty good name like Dorff, like Dorff on golf. Like that's. That would have been great if he rode away and like his feet don't touch the pedal. I thought he was going to bust the motorcycle and turn around the gravel. Yeah. Yeah, he was not very good with that bike. They didn't one take. It was one big long shot. So he's okay. So here's the exchange. He's between him and Jack and Jack is Kevin Bacon's character.
He says, what you've been smoking, boy? And then Jack says, smoking, don't smoke causes cancer. And then he said, officer Dorff's like, you know what I mean? What did you get off a spaceship or something? Come on. Colombian gold, man. Grass hash the weed dig the weed. Yes. That was pretty good. That was good. I was like, what do you just have to feel like they did it that way on purpose. I mean, that was, that was pretty good with the square.
Yeah. The skin. Again, it's that whole setup, like Ralph's on the loose, which again, I don't know how you're not going to notice this random dude showing up in his three piece. Well, his vest and his button down shirt. Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah, then soon after that cop leaves, Ralph surprises Alice in the main cabin and warns her that the other counselors and the other counselors about the camp's death curse. So again, he shows up, he manages to sneak into a closet and just hang out.
Yeah. Until somebody randomly opens it, which I know it's supposed to be like a jump scare and to show that Ralph's crazy. And then, you know, I do love how he gets on his bike and rides away. I guess he rode 20 miles on that piece of shit bike to get to camp. And now he's just, well, see you later. I've just let you do it. Yeah. I love that shot though. It's almost like they're like, hey, we got to get to 90 minutes of this film. So let's just watch him as far as he can go. It's when he's out of the screen. Yeah. I would have waited for him to stop and look back at the camera or something.
You still want me to keep going? Yeah. Yeah. We'll get into it later. But there's that shot, the shot of Annie making, I think it was not Annie, Alice making coffee. Yeah. We were lighting the lanterns and the shot of Alice barring the door. That was easily 15 minutes of the entire movie. I mean, like, push for her for like checking everything, but we had like a cut, like a cut, you know, play by play of her check it. I mean, did you like it in the lamps? No, like the best thing if I'm watching a live stream, you know, some movie, the best part about her bar in the door, other than the rope, nothing else would have helped.
The door opened. Help. Right. I would have just, we talked about that. Right. You would have slowed whoever it was down. But yeah, it's your time, good not. I'll give her that. She tried a really quick good not. Yeah. But we'll get into that more later. Oh, Jesus. So, um, as night begins to fall and as a thunderstorm rolls in, even though the sky's clear in one of the shots, no big deal, Ned wanders off down to the lake and sees someone lurking in one of the cabins and investigates. Jack and Marcy enter the same cabin to seek shelter from the incoming storm and have sex unaware that Ned is lying on the top bunk above them with his throat slash.
I was so happy with that. So this is the first, like, you know, this is really the first part where anybody except for the counselors in the beginning trying to have it where somebody's having sex. And I would say that as most other Friday of the thirteenths go and other slasher movies from the eighties, it took a long time to get to this point. Well, they already killed Annie though. Yeah. But I mean, not so much the death, but the teens having to be honest, yeah, there was nudity. Yeah. Well, yeah, for these being notoriously known for just having TNA or tits and ass or boobies
and ass sorry. And that's right, boobies, boobies, sorry for notorious for that. They didn't start out with a lot. Like you get like one boob and then that's about it. I mean, there's nobody nobody else's naked even like wet t-shirts later on. Nobody. I mean, there's there in their underwear play and strip monopoly, which sounds like the dumbest game that sounds like someone who's I want to know the rules because they never explain how it works.
Yeah. Like when do you anything like go or what? Can't pay somebody. You got to give them clothes. I don't know. I was disappointed in that. They could have expanded upon that and cut back on the coffee maker. It would have been great if they cut back and like I think Bill is the other guy playing with them and he's got like Alice's clothes on like because he got basket. Yeah. When the banker of that money started getting close, it would have been yeah. That would have been pretty funny. So let's see Alice, Bill and Brenda smoke pot and play strip monopoly.
Oh, no. Kevin. The pot. Marcy and Jack finish. What? Do we skip over where Kevin Bacon gets killed? Oh, no, you're. We haven't gotten that point. Because remember they have sex and you see Ned is dead, but he doesn't die right away. Ned's dead baby. Marcy has to go pee. So here we get into that. I was like good for her. You have to pee when you're done. Marcy and Jack. Yeah. Yeah. You don't want to eat Jack. I was like good girl. Marcy and Jack finish and Marcy leaves to use the bathroom. Ned's blood drips down onto Jack from the top bunk. But before Jack can investigate, he is murdered by an arrow through his neck from underneath
the bed. The killer then follows Marcy to the bath house where she too is murdered with an axe to the face. Possibly the coolest kill in the entire movie. I mean that axe to the face. How on earth did they get that arrow up through the mattress and the, okay. What kind of, what kind of angle? Oh, I know. I know. You know, you have to be really strong and she is strong under that sweater. Yeah. In part, I think it's part three. They have an homage to that where Jason again is underneath the bed.
Well, obviously this isn't Jason, but small, but he's, he's underneath the bed and it's a full on spear and it goes through two people and I always, I always thought like how the fuck there's no possible way like, yeah, I mean, it's a cool kill. But yeah, it's like just stab them, stab them in the face. I mean, special, special, special effects on that were pretty good. I thought for the time. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, and apparently I did remember hearing about this. There's, I didn't notice this in the version we watched.
There's like a spurt of blood that actually surprised Kevin Bacon. Right. And you see the surprise in his face. I didn't notice that in the version we watched. Yes. So the little, it's like a famous, what's his name? The special, it's like Seville, I think is the, yeah, I'm not sure. I can't remember who he's afraid. He did like dawn of the dead. I hate this. I don't know this, but yeah. Anyway, yeah, he had that whole rig set up and Kevin Bacon had to, they basically cut a hole in the mattress apparently and he's laying underneath the bed with his head popped
through and then they had to put all the apparatus. All the fake body from his neck on top and it took hours. So Kevin Bacon's in this and basically they got one shot at it and they stuck the arrow through and the apparatus for the blood to squirt got stuck. So the special effects guy was right underneath the bed with Kevin Bacon and basically just pulled the tube off and blew in it. And that's why it's. Yeah. That's right. That's why it bubbles up like that. It was, yeah. Yep. But it was surprising, but it actually worked. It gave him more of a surprise look as he wasn't expecting that he shaved his armpits
for the scene. Oh, right. Um, Kevin Bacon did not want to have hairy armpits. Well, here's one of my first clothing issues that I complained about watching the movie last night. So Marcy gets up to pee. She has to go to the bath house. There's a thunderstorm and she goes in a shirt in her underwear. Yeah. Who wouldn't put on pants? Uh, she's good. I'm sorry. She wouldn't put on a rain slicker or grab an umbrella. I mean, half of when you're underwear, half of them don't put the other girl who leaves the strip poker game and goes to the back to the bathhouse and dies and they don't put
shoes on. They're running through the mud. Yeah. Oh, we haven't see it jumping ahead. We haven't gotten to that. That's number two clothing issue. Yeah. I remember watching them be like, who would do that? Nobody. You know, put on some pants. I don't know how it would go work at this place. I was watching. That was the one thing I kept bitch. I was like, this place is disgusting. Like the, the camp, can you imagine sending your kids there with like, it reminds me of a Homer's, uh, with the mattresses, like Homer, when he gets all the free mattresses that are year and so, and he builds for Homer, like it's like, they all look disgusting.
I'm like, and then they have all the mattresses like the towards the end when she runs it, they're trying to get the rifle. There's that stack of old mattresses there that they, I guess use the kids lay it on when they shoot rifles. That's how they do that. But, uh, yeah, it's just disgusting. It's everything. Everything's like the wood. That's the thing. It's, it's the end of June and they're going to have kids there for the summer, summers are different. New Jersey. Can't be terrible. I don't know who had the idea. Yeah. It's a show. My parents loved me and never sent me to camp.
All right, so now we got to get back to strip Monopoly. So, um, the rain has picked up and Brenda leaves Bill and Alice to close the windows in her cabin. And again, this is clothing issue number two. The door blows open. She says it's pouring rain. And so she just runs out in what was it like a bra and no, she grabs a slicker. She has a slicker. Her clothes. No, she doesn't know. Presumably sitting. She has her clothes. Yeah, she has them in her and yeah, she has them attached like cuddled to her body, but she doesn't bother.
Okay. I missed that. So I'm like, put some clothes on and then go. I mean, it's not like you're going to get any less wet. It's already raining. So I watched this in my basement. It's the first time I ever seen it on a big screen and you notice some shit. Like you're like, Oh, that looks like, I just, I was like watching all the, like one of the things you guys are talking about, like, what did you notice? Did you notice that it when Annie, this is way back in the very beginning, when she comes into town and she stops to talk to the dog. Yeah. And the gas pump says let it gas.
I saw that. I actually saw that. Yeah. It's like back in the day. That's right. No wonder you have serial killers apart. There's lead all in the air. So there was a lead in every, leaving it, drinking it. It was right. It was just, it was a lead bill everywhere. Oh, Jesus. So one of the things that you were asking, like things that I noticed watching it was the death of the snake really bothered, oh, they killed that snake. And the woman that owned the snake was on set and she didn't know they were going to kill it. She'd give it to them to kill it.
I didn't read that. I didn't read that. That's no. I was, we were watching colors like that's a real snake. I was like, yeah, and they really kill it right now. And yeah, yeah. Awful. And it wasn't even like a deadly snake. Like I was, it's somebody who's like pet rattle snake. I'd be like, okay, at least. But it was just, I was like, I was, yeah, I was living when that happened. I was like, fuck these people. I hope they all die. Well, they don't do that. No, I like how that like they all react. Like Kevin Bacon's like the snakes back there and he decides to like jump over the bed to go at it.
I was like, yeah. Like I'm going to flush it out. Yeah. What the fuck would do that? Like, yeah. And Kevin Bacon, we miss, we didn't talk about this early. He's diving into the water to save Ned when he's fake. Yeah. And I'm like, Jesus, you belly flapped like a motherfucker. Yeah. That was like the bloopers he pops out. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. But you know what his armpits were shaped. So nobody made fun of him. Yeah. He had his speed on too. So he's all good. He's got a tan line that my kid noticed, you know, significant tan line. All right. So meanwhile, Steve Christie finishes up in town. This is the guy who runs the camp stopping at a local diner, which seemed really random. Oh, God. I forgot about that. Going back to randomness, the banjo music when Kevin Bacon, it's like, what was that? You got the like the creepy theme and then no music and then here comes three camp counselors
from like straight from smoking in the bandit, apparently with this random ass banjo music playing. So sorry, I just had a brain rotation on that one, driving on the wrong side of the road the whole time. They're driving all over. So so so yeah, Steve is at a diner, which I thought was weird because I'm like, I don't remember them ever leaving the camp, but apparently in this one, you know, Steve's at a diner. They head back in part two, they do the same thing. Yeah, excuse, but my thing is he left by himself, it was daytime, right?
And he's at this diner for like four hours, I guess that's a good grub. Maybe he was visiting his lady friend while he was there. I don't know. Cause Alice seemed to be a not happy with his advances. We'll put it that way. Yeah. No. So in part in part two, there's a lot more counselors at first. And so as a plot device, half of them go out onto the town and go to a bar, which seems like a normal like, yeah, the kids aren't there yet. Yeah, we're doing good.
Let's go out. Good drinking. And that's why there's only like six or eight people left to make it. But in the beginning, there's like 20 people there. So it was like, I mean, it would take forever. It seemed more real. Yeah. But just him hanging out. Well, I did, we did love the one part where is it the truck driver who makes the commies like, Oh, yeah, he's trying to fix it up. He dropped 25 grand in that place. And I'm like, and they're walking around when they're like fixing up the place. I was like, there's no fucking way this guy dropped 25 grand. Maybe in the pot in 1980 into this thing.
Yeah. Yeah. Now like a hundred thousand bucks because unless he like, yeah, unless he like rebuilt the place. Back to the plot, while Amanda does the currency conversion. All right. All right. So he heads back. Christie, Steve Christie, the guy heads back to the camp only for his Jeep to break down. He hitches a ride from a police officer, Sergeant Tierney, and is given a lift to the camp upon arrival. Steve Christie encounters someone flashing a light in his face. He soon recognizes this person and is then stabbed in the stomach by the unseen killer.
So he knows. He misses four keys, 82 thousand dollars, 83, 83 thousand dollars is what he did to that camp. That Jeep must have a really good sound system. I mean, I don't know what the hell do you do that? So a little brad fact for you. The Jeep is the same Jeep. Yep. Yep. It's once they had one CJ5 on set and it's the same thing. It took a little bit.
That actually makes sense being that this movie was made for what, like $500,000. Yeah, but that was a lot of money back then. How much was that? 1980. What's her name? The lead actress made a thousand dollars a day because she wanted to buy a new car. She said, if you give me X amount of dollars, which is what she needed to buy this car, tension would do it. And he bought the car. Right. Ten grand, yeah. Michael Caine and Jaws 4, where he's like, I don't know what the movie is about. The house it bought is really nice. Yeah. Yeah. Betsy Palmer asked for 10 grand and she was on, she was on set for 10 days.
That was it. Yep. So. So back at camp, Brenda is lured out of her cabin by a strange childlike voice to the archery range, which he had seemingly murdered. That was pretty creepy, but I guess that was the mom. That's, that's Mrs. Voorhees screaming, help me, help me. Yeah. Yeah. So in today's dollars, this movie cost a million, seven, yeah, a million, six hundred and sixty thousand dollars. Okay. I mean, I think as it doesn't, I can see how it goes fast.
Like if you're doing like, you got to pay for all the, the crew and everything. Sure. You know, it's like nobody's making a ton of money from this movie. But if you pay, you know, 20,000 of that guy, 20,000 of that guy, 20,000 of that guy, I think it would add up. The only thing I read about the crew was that some of the people actually stayed on at the campground. I was like, Oh, God, that's terrible. Like they wouldn't Sally Field for the lead. That would have been funny. She was like, Oh, good. As Alice. Yeah.
They weren't Sally Field as Alice. Alice? Oh, I thought as Mrs. Voorhees. No, no, no, no. She's not old. Yeah. That's a good point. Good job, Sally. Yeah. You made the right show. Well, apparently when Betsy Palmer read the script originally, she's like, this is a piece of shit and threw it across the roof. I've seen pictures of her at conventions saying that and the writers sitting there. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I mean, good for her. Yeah. I mean, hey, she got her car.
She said that she warmed up to it over time that like the, the, the more distance there was between when she actually made the movie, um, there's the other quote where she's like, I don't know who the hell this guy in the hockey mask is, but apparently they're like, yeah, she's like, I don't think he's my son, the rest of the franchise. So Brenda's seemingly has been murdered at the archery range. Her screams send Bill and Alice searching for Brenda and the others, but to no avail. And I thought that was actually, that seemed realistic to me because it was like Bill comes
back and Alice is like, I thought I heard a scream and I thought it's all the life on the archery range. But now they're off and he's like, I'll go check it out. She's like, can I please go with you? Cause I was like, yeah, it wasn't just like stupid girl sitting there screaming like, I don't know. She was like, um, yeah, that, that's a part that actually felt really real. Well, the one thing I thought was weird. Why have the generator in the movie like they could just be cutting the main power off it on. Right. Like there's always a main power source. What would they, what would they, they have this whole other, you can't have a main power
source. Well, they had, they said, the one point they say, Oh, we have a backup generator. Uh, Steve told me how to use it because the power from town is flaky and then they go out there and they turn it on and then it's, I guess on and then she turns it. That's like, it seemed like this extra like, the way for her to kill the power. I guess. Yeah, but she could, could have a bad guy. Could you just, I mean, she got the phone line. She did. They didn't say, Oh, we have a, we have a crank phone out. Like they didn't, like she's, I mean, she just, she knew where everything was from utility
standpoint. She could just cut the power from the main road or whatever. Like, I mean, yeah, that's a good point. I don't know. It was just not, it was something for Bill to go check and get killed. Do it. And then get 58, you're a woman to hang him on the back of a door. Yeah. Hey, you're getting ahead again. We haven't even gotten to that part. Well, I do like, I do like how they, uh, it's Annie who gets killed at the archery range, right? No. Who's Brenda? Brenda. I like how they foreshadow that with fucking your jerk ass Ned. Oh God. Yeah. I'm sorry to get up and he shoots an arrow at her.
Well, yeah. What a fuck. Yeah. That guy deserves it. He was a total newspaper. I swear they killed him first on purpose because yeah, I know, but I'm unsatisfied because we didn't get to see it. If he's killed off screen, very, very good point. Yeah. So, um, they can't find Brenda. They try to use the phones and their vehicles to discover none of them working. Yes. They didn't have cell phones back then everybody. The two decide to wait it out for Mr. Christie and Alice falls asleep in the main cabin. Bill leaves to check the generator in the shed.
Alice wakes up and leaves to find him. And when she reaches the generator shed, she discovers Bill dead pinned to the door of the shed with multiple arrows. Again, it's a shocking kind of thing because the door closes in his there, but yeah. How? Yeah, I know. How the hell. This franchise is riddled with that in part. Yeah. In part four. We have another one. We have another one coming up. Oh, yeah. Yeah. In the main cabin, barricading herself inside for 10 minutes and arming herself.
After it gets quiet, Brenda's body is hurled through the window at Alice and headlights appear outside fleeing from the body. Alice runs outside thinking the headlights belong to Steve's Jeep, but a woman named Pamela Voorhees steps out of the vehicle and again, eventually it's where Jason is super human and Jason can pick people up and throw them. But when do we start here ridiculously? I mean, she tossed Brenda through that window. She did. That's pretty impressive. We missed the part though, where she's making the coffee. When was that?
I don't remember that was sometime during all this, but it was definitely, you know, it's a riveting scene. I would like it. Oh, I know. It's when Bill goes to check the generator when he gets killed. She's okay. You don't know how to make coffee. This movie will show you. That's the takeaway. That's the takeaway from this movie is if you don't know how to make coffee, watch Friday the 13th. My one part I couldn't stop watching during that four minute scene of her making coffee is that she couldn't put the fucking lid back on the coffee properly. If she takes the instant coffee out, right, unscrews it.
It's like, you know, Folger's crystals or whatever. And then she puts the lid back on and it's all cock-eyed. It didn't get on the threads. She puts it back on the shelf. Then she goes to the pantry to get the sugar and come back out as she lights the oven to start boiling the kettle for the water. And all you can see is I couldn't stop focusing it because I'm watching on the base three. I'm like, I'm like, that lids off that lid, like, put the lid back right. I know. The coffee's going to go stale. And I'm like, and then, and then the best thing is she uses that coffee. And then there's another tin of fine Bavarian coffee right now.
I figured the lid was totally different on that one. Couldn't you figure out how to get the lid out of that? I'm like, I'm like, why wouldn't you use the fine Bavarian? It's right there. Yeah. I mean, there's some stuff that is a pretty riveting scene. So Alice shows Mrs. Voorhees the carnage and Mrs. Voorhees begins to comfort Alice but eventually begins raving about a young boy that drowned in 1957. She explains that the boy's name was Jason and he was her son and Friday the 13th is his birthday. Mrs. Voorhees becomes aggressive and proceeds to reveal herself as the killer seeking revenge
on the counselors who let Jason drown by not watching him, charging it, Alice. Alice manages to fend off the crazed killer with a fireplace poker and flees, discovering his body and Mrs. Voorhees jeep and Steve hanging from a tree, which again, he falls down as she runs up in the time that Mrs. Voorhees is superhuman, which is why her son is. She was just maybe she's like a tripwire expert. My thing at that point, and I yelled this last night as I'm watching it, you get her
down with the poker, the fireplace poker. You know she's killed about you at this point, it's you or her. You just keep hitting her. You keep hitting her and then you run and you run straight away from there. You don't try to get like if the car doesn't start or you don't want to get in the car because the body's in there fine, then you just run down the fucking road because the only way she's coming back for you and then but Alice proceeds to like run around to different hot like oh I got to go clean up how to find a better hiding.
I'm like get a fuck out of there, just run towards town. My kid pointed out a really good thing you mentioned already Brad, he was like I don't care if there's a body in the jeep, you're going to die, get in the privacy and drive away. Or open that to the chin. It'll be fine. It's a soft it's a soft door. You could just push that fucking body right out, yeah, that part didn't make any sense. Getting the jeep and drive away, your Jurassic Park this shit man, stay there. You don't stay there but I would have hit the I mean she hits from the back with the poker.
I would have turned that poker and I would have gone right for the head a couple of times and then run off and then when I run like actually maybe not run maybe you stay there. Take away here. Don't fuck with Brad. Those two fireplace poker's kill people because I mean you know I don't. You remember there was a murder read here by several years ago that you know they couldn't be done. They fell out of the stairs right right now after now attack, yeah, that's right. Well, they did find those fibers you just look it up yeah the staircase it's a great documentary
here. Yeah, no, I just yeah, I would. I mean it was realistic in that like it was good that she's running around she's trying to find something you she finds the gun. And she's desperately trying to find the bullets and she can't find the bullets and she's trying to hide. But yeah, that's after she seemingly for whatever reason decides I can't get in this jeep even though there are dead people everywhere because there's a dead person in the jeep obviously works because. I think it was running this is where he's just rolled up in it.
I mean like it's not. Yeah, and that's the thing is like if Mrs. Moore he's had taken the keys that maybe you know Alice jumps in looks for the keys that would have been better. No, no, no keys and he gets out and starts running around that would make sense goes back and shakes her. Hey, hey, will you wake up? Can I have your keys? I'm trying to get away from you. Yeah. Go in and serve you. The body. Yeah. This is where he's where's your purse. Yeah. I really need your keys. So Alice runs to the boathouse where she finds a gun but can't find any bullets. Okay, sorry.
Jumped. I jumped ahead that time. This is where he's enters the boathouse and overpowers Alice before Alice manages to strike her with the gun and flee once again again smash her head in. Yeah. Pretty much. Yeah, keep beating her. She's going to kill her at the end. So we'll just do it now. Why wait? Yeah. Make the movie a little bit shorter. This is the final. The final boss comes back three to it's like I already beat him one time. How do I beat him again? Why is the music not stopping? Yeah. Shit. This game's not over yet.
We're the end. She runs back to the main cabin and hides in a closet after a few moments of quiet. This is where he's appears again and begins chopping through the door. Okay. Let me ask you this. I never became out the same year. I know. Did the shining come out in 1980? I think it might have. Yeah. After. I know. What I have a question is why does the pantry have a lock on the inside of it? Because the sugars get scared. The sugar tries to get out. Raccoons, I don't know.
On the inside? It's on the inside. I don't know. I don't know. So the raccoons can mute the outside when on lock, but not the inside. I don't know. The shutter legs. It's privacy. This is the dude who dropped 25 grand. Nowhere. He probably put the lock on the inside name. It's got stuck inside. Sorry. There's this locks everywhere. Yeah. It's for. It's for Ralph. Crazy Ralph is a locksmith. They didn't go into that. Oh, Jesus. Like I saw that part. I was like, what the fuck is this? It's the same thing with her barricading the door the wrong way. It's like, but you know, they do the shit moves all the time.
Have you guys ever seen, um, oh, what's the, what's the Mel Gibson, the M nights Shyamalot with the, where they're, um, signs, yeah. Have you ever seen that? I don't know if you ever noticed the one part where they're like boarding up the door. They're literally boarding up a door that opens up outward and they're boarding it up as if, you know, you'd board up a door that opens in work. So it can't be open. Right. And they basically are just putting the boards up. So when the aliens open the door, they just see a bunch of boards and it's like, it's
not a doorway. It's like aliens are afraid of wood while they're, well, they're afraid of water, apparently, but, uh, spoiler. It's actually been rewatching that movie for, uh, October, uh, that movie is maybe I shouldn't be bad signs. It's yeah. Yeah. I think it's terrible. It's not, it's not as bad as what's the other thing that's happening that where the wind is the killer. No, the trees. The trees. Yeah. But it's, they're running from the wind because the trees are, yeah, but it's always, they're
just Marky. Mark is running from the wind the whole time. Yeah. Yeah. And it's the one where the guys like fascinated with hot dogs. That's such a weird scene. Talk about crazy rough. There's the hot dog guy in the happening, uh, hot dogs. I love hot dogs. Why? I like hot dogs too. Not like this guy. Like this guy. Yeah. It's the end of the world. People are dying randomly. You're in some guys greenhouse and he's rambling on about hot dogs saying it really weird. Okay. All right. So back to Friday the 13th after a few moments of quiet and this is where he's appears again and begins shopping through.
Okay. Sorry. I got that. She breaks inside and Alice manages to hit her with a frying pan, which was pretty cool. Again. I'm not sure. Keep hitting her again. Yeah. She's already come back twice, right? Yeah. Yeah. I know. She's bleeding out of her head. But I'd hit her. I'd just keep hitting her with that fry. Until there's like a man. And the head is just mush and then it's getting a Jeep and drive to town. Yeah. So, you know, she believes that she's dead again. Instead. I've got a better idea. Let's just leave her there and then I'm gonna go out to the lake and get in a canoe.
How's that sound? Alice. We're going to be dead. Thumbles down to the lake and falls onto the shore exhausted. But it isn't long until the craziness is where he's attacks again. After a prolonged struggle, Alice manages to grab Mrs. Voorhees machete and decapitate her. Yep. Yeah, but I mean, that's a really good strike. That machete is. Yeah. Yeah. That machete must be sharp. Seriously sharp. Hitter just right. So. And then yeah. So then Alice is everything Alice has done up to this point with the exception of getting in the Jeep.
It's made some sense. You know, she's she's under stress. She's hiding. She's trying to live traumatized. She climbs into a canoe and floats out in the middle of the lake. In the middle of the night. The middle of the night. Fuck that. Yeah. No. I opened another cabin. Jesus, go get some sleep. I don't know. No, fuck. The mosquitoes alone. I know. You just decapitated a woman who was trying to. The adrenaline. I feel like you're going to have a drone in the run. Yeah. You're running those 20 miles. Yeah. You're like, Hey, I just did a marathon in like an hour.
Yeah. Yeah. Find the keys. Get in the Jeep. Anyway, daylight comes. She sees police officers on the shore of the lake. But before she can call to them, the decomposed body of young Jason Borges comes lunging out of the water, grabbing Alice and pulling her out of the canoe iconic scene. Yeah. Pretty cool. Pretty good jumpscare. And then you find out right after that she wakes up at the hospital and tries to explain to the police officers that there was a boy in the lake. But the officer claims they didn't find a boy. The film ends without saying, and he's still there with a lingering shot of the lake.
So obviously she's traumatized. Yeah. She's not everything's firing upstairs. But I mean, honestly, it was kind of a cool ending. So Tom Savini is the special effects guy I couldn't think of earlier. He apparently would go into all the theaters when it was first being run for the last five minutes just to see the reaction of the audience for that jump scare. Really? Yeah. I mean, pretty good.
Yeah. I mean, I'm going to jump scare when I was that, you know, it came out in 1980. So let's say we're seven. No, but let's say we're seeing it like 82 and it's VHS. You know, I'm nine. I would have hidden behind the couch for that. Yeah, that was scared me. Yeah. So I don't remember this one because I don't, but the first one I really remember watching was part three because of all the three D. Yes, and they reuse this jump scare at the very end. They redo it at the very end.
They do the same thing. Jason's a little bit more mature, no, he's a little more, more, more barnacles and shit on him. Okay. He looks. Barnacles in a lake. Well, I don't, I'm trying to remember. I heard another podcast they referred to him as frog boy. He looks a little more froggy. So I did remember seeing something where it's like, obviously this one was filmed at, you know, it was filmed at a lake in New Jersey or somewhere. And it was a real lake and it's not, it's not a real camp.
It was a real campsite. And you can tell. Yeah. There's one later on where I don't know. I'd never noticed this as a kid, but actually they did it in like California and they built a lake and it looks disgusting. I think that's just like part three, filthy dirty water and you know, it's like two feet deep. What was that? That's part three, I believe. Is it? It just looks just nasty. Part two is five years after this one. Part three is, and that's another Friday, the 13th. Part three is again on Crystal Lake, Camp Crystal Lake, but it's like the private side
where people have houses apparently and it's one day later from part two. And so, but yeah, that's seen at the end. That's the one I remember the most where she's on the lake in the canoe, just like in this one and then she looks up at the barn where she had just hung Jason the night before. I don't know if you remember like she basically like hooks onto the bayhaler and drops him and he is hanging, he hangs it and kills him that way. Yeah, I remember that. And then he's like in the window of the house, like banging on it, trying to get out and
then frog boy Jason drops out of lake and grabs her and then she wakes up. Oh no. I think it ends. No, I think it ends. At that point, if I remember correctly, but I don't know. I had some this one, not particularly, but three and four. It had some traumatizing things. I loved them as a kid, but it definitely after watching them like each time. It stuck with you. It stuck. I mean, I remember our house we grew up in in North Raleigh.
We had the back stairs up the back into the bonus room above the garage. Yeah. And if it was late at night, so underneath our stairs at our house, there was, it was over the garage. There was like a storage unit that had like my dad kept his tools and stuff at it. Not like it was a closet, a storage closet, right, right, the stairs and he kept his tools and all that. But in my head, I thought Jason Voorhe is going to be standing on there and he's going to reach his hand through the finished stairs of the, and grab my feet and pull me like,
yeah, I don't know. So I would go up the stairs like three at a time, I brought, I brought up the stairs. Yep. And similar for me was the back door into the garage because you'd have to walk around the back of the house to get in. I mean, there were so many chances for just some random dude to jump out and grab you trying to get in that way. And I think it's, I think my fear, fear of the stairs. It stems from, I believe, I must have seen this one time, one of these Jason movies before
we moved out to New Hampshire where we had a unfinished basement and the stairs with the open stairs and I, I remember turning the light off at the bottom of stairs and walking and running up them and my foot got caught and I fell down and I thought for a minute someone had grabbed my foot for just a second. And I believe like, oh yeah, all that, I feel like I'm in therapy right now. There's some trauma invented those open stairs. Oh my gosh. Did it just to screw with people like, yeah, the kids are going to be scared to death
of this. Brad, tell me how that made you feel. Yeah. No, I get it. Yeah. Those kind of stairs. Yeah. No, thanks. I'm not going to lie to you. When I go up tonight, I'm in my basement right now. When I go up to, I will take the stairs probably two at a time. The movie that did that to me was The Exorcist. Like anytime I saw a cross on somebody's wall, like, you know, you go visit your friend's house and they're Catholic and they've got like, I would just be like, yeah. Yeah. But back to what I said kind of in the beginning of this is that this was the one that started
the franchise, but this definitely isn't the one that I remember. And if we had a sleepover that we would necessarily rent, like if it was the only one fine, but you know, you got to have Jason. You had to have Freddy's for what I'm trying to the 13, three and four for me. It's three, four and six are the ones. Yeah. Well, if I remember right five, the one where it's not, it's like a sheriff or something is damn near like a softcore porn movie.
Right. The guy that wrote it kind of him was a software porn director. This one. This one. Yeah. Yeah. So to go, but now I'm thinking like as I'm going back, I'm like, the whole premise of Jason is bullshit. Like, I mean, not that like just, but like, like you said earlier, Amanda, like what was he living in the lake? No, he wasn't living in the lake. And I'm like, the kid died in the lake or drowned in the lake.
They didn't find his body. It looked for the body. Right. There's like, you know, like what he's, he's aging as he's like laying down there. So did we ever figure that out? Do they actually say in the movie that they never found Jason's body? I don't think they do. You know what? I think in two, they do they talk there. So when they have all the camp camp counselors at the very beginning or around, there's some expedite or some, like the exposition, exposition being said, and I believe the one guys to,
oh, yeah, this is, there's a kid named Jason and he died here and I believe they said and the body was never found. So then I'm like, well, they have the fuck, you know, he drowned. If you never found a body, hey, there you go. You just figured it out. He just ran off into the woods and decided to live it. It is little, oh, man, that in two, do you remember the, the shit, like Shaq, he lives in with his mom's head is in the altar and all that is like that shrine to her. Yeah.
Yeah, that's pretty. I guess they never took her head. Yeah. Yeah. She came in from the woods and grabbed her head and ran off here. He came out of the lake, took her head into the lake, then eight. And then, yeah. Yes. Makes perfect sense. No, but I'd say there is a great, and two, there is a great scene where the final girl, shit, I came up with her name. I think it's Ginny, I might be totally wrong on that, but she runs out into the woods and cumbles across his shank, his little shack, right? And then she shuts the door and she
stand there. And like, you can see through the window him running from like 20 yards away with the burlap sack mask into the house. Oh, it's. That's creepy. It is a creepy and it's a great shot. And yeah, I'm like getting goosebumps right now. Just thinking about that. Yeah. Yeah. I'm reading about, I'm on the wiki site reading about part two and it says that, so aller survived shortly, disappeared shortly thereafter because Alice unfortunately dies at the beginning of the second. Yeah.
Jason comes and finds her in the town. It kills her. Yeah. Local residents believe Jason is still alive and viciously protects the area around Crystal Lake. So it's just, he never died. Right. So then they're like, let's open the camp again, even though five years ago, well, because the murder, well, they, they alluded to it here and they're like, well, the murder, the murder of camp blood as it's now called was Mrs. Voorhees and she's dead. So it's all cool. So we don't have anything to worry. Yeah. Let's open the shitty camp again.
I do like in part six, which is Tommy as the adult who killed Jason in part four. Sorry. I'm like going all around, but he comes back and they've renamed the whole town and the sheriff's like, we don't call it that like your crate, like, yeah, it's because Tommy is in the Sanis Island in part five where it's like one of the orderlies is pretending to be Jason. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The Tommy arc is pretty interesting.
I apparently watched these a lot. You what? I apparently watched these a lot and remember too much. Tommy. Tommy is in. Is Tommy first in the third one? He's no, he's in the fourth one. Because it's a Corey Feldman. Yeah, he's a little kid and he winds up like killing Jason at the end and he's like slashing him over and over and he's like, I don't think he lives near the camp. Yeah. And then Jason attacks him. He's a little older and then he's, he's like a reoccurring character for two or three after that.
Oh, okay. Five. He's in five and six. He's like, he's the hero to Jason's villain. Okay. He tries. He's like, he makes it his personal quest to destroy Jason. Originally, they were, they were going to make him because he went psychotic. He was going to become the new Jason's what I read. But they didn't go with that like they didn't go with that plot line. But yeah. Yeah. It's in four. He shaves his memory, shaves his head to look like him because he's all just form. And then he comes up and then he's just hacking away at him. Yeah.
That's right. Cause he's up, he's up in his room and like Jason's beating up his sister or something and he's just headed real quick and comes down and confused as Jason enough that they can attack him. Which is like die, die, die. It's kind of creepy, which is a callback to part two where the final girl finds the shrine to mom that has her sweater, her blue sweater that she's wearing in this one with her head there. And she puts the sweater on and then is like, Jason, I'm mommy, like be a good boy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
We didn't talk about that part. That's a weird part where she's like talking to herself. She's like, what was that Jason? Kill them? Kill them? I mean, she's clearly insane. Yeah. They don't, you know, there's no. There's no evidence. Right. Well, so that goes to my other, another, my Brad fact. So we always said, right? That's how we always remember it. It's the actual composer said it was like as the beginning of kill and then ma ma ma as
in, yeah, kill the mom, kill the mom, yeah, which it does not know it does not. Yeah. Try, but no, it's, it's just some random. Yeah. I mean, honestly, again, the theme is not memorable. Jason's hockey mask and that noise are what, you know, you think of when you think of these. We have to watch part. We don't know what the damn noise is. I feel like I feel like we need to do part three just so we can see him get the hockey mask because the, the poor nerd guy that has the hockey mask and then the, that he gets
it from is sad. And then the pathetic 3D that they do, I mean, is oh, yeah, the 3D back then it was he squished. Not quite as bad as like the 60s, but it's nowhere near what you. It's the second evolution of 3D really, right? Yeah. And a squish, literally one part that Jason squishes a man's head and the eyeball pop out towards the screen and you can see the spring on it. But it's the whole thing where it's like, all right, you have a deck of cards.
Start throwing cards at the camera. Yeah. You know, because that's what we've got to do for 3D. We have to have some shit flying at the camera. Well, at one point, you say at one point, there's the guy with the yoyo, remember? And he's yoyoing to the camera. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. Exactly. And it's just like good Lord. Yeah. It's like we have the 3D camera and damn it, we're going to use it. We're going to get every shot we can. Yeah. Apparently, apparently that was a big contention among some of the actors on part 3, they're like, why would we do this? And like, well, because we've got the camera, you got to do it this way.
So we get the effect. Yeah. Well, that's the thing. I mean, you think about, it was really the Golden Age of 3D, you know, what we have now is shit. But back then, you know, we had this that we had Friday the 13th, far 3 with Jaws 3D. Are you really the best Jaws movie that's ever been? I know. I can't believe it. Yeah. Well, do you guys think it held up? Yeah. I guess we should. Yeah. I didn't see it originally. Honestly, for me, this one's tough, but do you want to go first, Brad? I was talking. Do you want to go first, Amanda? Yeah. I was just like, I didn't, I didn't see it prior to this.
I don't think it, like I expected it to be a travesty. Like, I really thought that this was going to be laughably horrible. I think I spoiled you because I enjoy really, really bad movies. And this was no like robot monster. No. This wasn't wound zero to. Yeah. None of this. Like that. But. So for me, like it wasn't, like I said, just an absolute shit show. Yeah. I didn't think it was terrible. I didn't think it was good.
But yeah, I think maybe that's like, to take your point, like maybe I've seen too many really bad movies. You had some holes in it. Just a few. Yeah. So, I mean, I don't know if you were going to watch a horror movie for Halloween, you know, like, because it's October, I would say like, you know, yeah, like just show your kids. Hey, like, this is one of the movies that really started the whole genre. I mean, if you want me to depress you, you could say that it is something that you should watch once because it is a 41 year old classic movie. Yeah. Yeah. 41 Jesus. All right. Brad, what about you?
I'm torn deep breath. I wouldn't know. I don't think it's garbage. Yeah. I don't. I mean, I remember seeing as a kid and all that and but it wasn't the one that was like, it's not there's no Jason it. So it's got to knock for that. But this it really, to be honest, if you want to enjoy the Friday 13th franchise, you don't want to watch this one because because it ruins the whole other part of it, like because
they just veered, they just like did a 90 degree turn and bring Jason into like into. Yeah. You can watch two and three and four and five and six, maybe seven is a little 70 fights a girl with telekinesis. I'm not so sure about that one. You can watch eight, which I think is the Manhattan rock camera. You watch eight not in 10 because they're fun and stupid. But actually, I take it back. You shouldn't watch this movie because they killed the snake.
And honestly, to your point, Brad, if they did the second one and just kind of, you know, obviously, if there was no Alice to kill in the very beginning, right? And they just these kids, they're at a camp because the I'll admit the camp setting being isolated like that, that is creepy. Yeah. You know, you can't get help and and what do you do if people start dying and you don't know like you don't know where to go. You don't know where things are, you know, to defend yourself. But if they just set up the whole like this kid drowned and, you know, everybody thinks
he died, but there's rumors that he's still around protecting it necessary and he doesn't like other people. Right. That's that's two. Yeah. But that if you just started there, then it's honestly a bit creepier. I mean, I think the first one is okay as a standalone, right? Once you try to make a series out of it, when you've killed the bad guy, unless you did a prequel or something else like they would do today, it's it is just kind of a throw away movie. I feel like it gave you the the the the setting, but didn't really, nothing else went with
fun. Yeah. You know, when I take my I take my original assessment back, don't watch it. Well, you can watch it as that. But then I would say go watch too and realize that's the real jumping off point. Like this is a this is not a bad movie for what it like, it's I don't know, but we spoiled the whole thing. So don't watch it after you listen to this podcast because we gave it away for some reason you've ended up getting to the very end of this podcast and haven't watched this movie,
but didn't listen to the beginning of the podcast or seen the movie that I would say yeah, go watch it because it's but actually it's not it's not a good suspense. Like Brock said earlier, they don't introduce the killer until they introduce the killer. Like that's bullshit. That's a terrible. That's not the killer. Right. That's yeah. It's not some murder mystery, you know, yeah, I know I would I would definitely I don't know. This one's skippable. I would definitely start with two. I think the franchise, like I said, two, three, four and six are I enjoy a lot.
Um, I mean, I almost feel like we should possibly do two, maybe three because they really do bookend each other. Yeah. I mean, they back right into it. Well, we can we can see about how the rest of the month goes since we have some plans. Right. But I guess I don't know it doesn't I don't think it holds up as a like I don't I don't think it's scary. I mean, my suit three last time I really saw it was three years ago. I showed it to my two kids and they were laughing.
Yeah. Most of the way through the movie and they were like, this is just bad. I mean, Ian was he was nine at the time and thought it was hilarious. And I was like, okay, this like this is one of the movies that terrified me as a kid at his age and he's laughing at it. So I'm like, okay, then it doesn't it's obviously been the young versions stuff that you are. Right. Yeah. I mean, I hope so. I mean, whatever generation would be better so yeah, their generation is used to the idea
of a crazy killer that's immortal sort of maybe and can't be yeah, but that's not even this one. This one. Yeah. Although he did so hard. It's so hard for me because like I feel like if you like horror movies and you just want to see what horror movies were like in the early eighties. This is one of those quintessential ones and it's not go watch started it. But it's not really Friday, the third go watch Halloween. It's just another setting at the campsite. So and it's not a terrible movie, but it's not a great movie.
Obviously it was filmed, you know, very low budget, a million six. This movie would never I feel like this script was ever presented. It wouldn't be made and released in theaters. It would be some piece of shit, sci-fi channel, you know, Netflix original kind of thing that gets two stars in the Internet movie database and is forgettable. Most people never see it. It's definitely it's a hit that sweet spot where this is what people wanted. And back then it was it was scary. It was kind of suspenseful, but it also you didn't have the you didn't know where it was
going to go. You know, now we know where it goes if people when we saw this originally, the people who saw it in the theater, they didn't know that it was going to be a series with this other person is the killer of the most of it. Yeah. But even that they don't like it's not like they play it up as if Jason's the person or whatever there's some they don't do enough of that like it's yeah, they don't tell you that it's like it's just a killer and it's I just don't know if I can like boil it down to does it hold up or not like a yes or no for me it would be like if you if you like
horror movies, watch it once. If you don't like horror movies or you like good horror movies, don't watch this one. It's not good, but in the context of when it came out, it's not terrible. So I'm on the fence. So we've got two nose and one. Yeah. So yeah, that's why I'm saying though, I'll watch it to roll your eyes at me. I'm not rolling. I think it's funny how you can boil it down to like this one, you know, we have a thousand
points we're talking about and they killed a snake. I'm out. Okay. Stand by your principles now. There you go. I'm I'm I can't commit one way or the other. I don't think it obviously doesn't and I certainly don't think it obviously does. I just think it's an early 80s slasher movie that went on to be a monster of a franchise. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. A monster. Oh my God. This is bad is when the they do a don't they do a Humphrey Bogart and then do a Catherine
Hepburn as well. I was like, Jesus. I will play this one. I have the most unlikable characters in it and I'm talking I'm talking to you, Ned. Well, I mean, even Alice, the final girl, she's not likeable, like there's nothing in daring about her. Like they don't. There's just it's a every, you know, I mean, none of them none of them were really likable and some of them were I did not like them actively hated them. Yeah. Dementia, I don't like Ned, you know, watch this for Ned, you know, when Ned dies, turn
it off. Yeah, right. You don't even see it though. Yeah. You see him dead. Yeah. Ned's dead. There you go. That's right. The 13th. Hooray. Happy October. All right. What are we doing? Are we going to let anybody know what we're doing next or are we just going to even know what we're doing next? I thought we knew we were doing next, but now I think we might be doing Friday the 13th all month. We're not going to announce what we're doing next. That gives us leeway to actually change over. Right.
It could be Friday the 13th or it could be something else. Who knows? It could be, you know, it will probably be air quotes scary, but October is a fun month. This is my favorite time of the year. I love October. It also depends on our time schedule. We've been it's been hard for us all to get together. It's true. There is this little thing of a global pandemic going on. Still. Wait, what? Yeah. We timed the start of this podcast very poorly.
It didn't cause it, right? Oh, I mean, with the reason why I mean, I don't think so, but scratch that I'll edit this out and post. I mean, I don't think they told me there wasn't anything in that beaker I dropped. So I mean, I couldn't be it. That monkey didn't look infected enough. All right. Well, thanks for tuning in. We're trying to get back into it. We hopefully enjoyed this. Hopefully you got at least one chuckle out of it and hopefully you're not just sitting there thinking, Oh my God, they killed a snake. We might become a bi-weekly podcast and we'll let you figure out which bi-weekly we mean.
Place a week. Wow. Every other week. No, I don't want to steal their thunder, yeah, but yeah. So yeah, we're just we're just going to do this when we can because we enjoy it and we hope there's at least maybe three other people in this world of six billion that maybe sort of kind of enjoy it a little. Our previous episode had two downloads from Germany, one from Denmark and one from Canada. So you know, we're international. Yeah.
So one of those was a slip up probably. So okay, we got three people at least clicked on it and quickly turned it off. Hey, guys, we hope you enjoyed it. Hey, sometimes the slip up produces a beautiful human being. You never know. Yeah. That was a joke. Yeah. We're going to end with that one. I'm going to add that out to everybody. Bye. Bye. Nice one, Brad.
